Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept insurance?
Athena Sports Performance and Rehab, PLLC is a cash-based, out-of-network physical therapy practice and does not bill insurance companies directly. This allows me to provide individualized, one-on-one care without being restricted by insurance-driven visit limits, treatment models, or time constraints.
If your insurance plan includes out-of-network physical therapy benefits, I can provide you with a detailed superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Coverage and reimbursement vary by individual plan, so I recommend contacting your insurance provider to understand your specific benefits.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes the information your insurance company needs to process and out-of-network claim. After your visit, Athena can provide you with a superbill that you can submit directly to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
Your reimbursement will depend on your individual insurance plan, including factors such as your deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-network benefits. Athena does not guarantee reimbursement.
Massachusetts allows patients to access physical therapy directly without first obtaining a referral in many circumstances. However, individual insurance plans may have their own requirements m particularly when seeking reimbursement.
If you are unsure whether you need a referral or prescription, please contact your insurance company directly.
Do i need a referral to see you?
What can i expect at my initial physical therapy or training visit?
Your first visit is about understanding you - not just your diagnosis. We will discuss your injury and symptoms if pertinent, goals, sport training demands, and previous medical history before completing a comprehensive physical assessment. From there we will develop an individualized plan designed around your goals and the demands of your sport.
Treatment may include hands-on techniques, therapeutic exercise, strength and conditioning, movement training, dry needling when appropriate, and progressive return-to-sport training.
What is the difference between sports pt and sports performance or personal training?
Physical therapy is designed for athletes recovering from an injury, surgery, pain, or movement impairment. The focus is on restoring function, rebuilding strength and capacity, and safely progressing back to sport and daily activities.
Sports performance or personal training is for athletes who want to become strong, faster, more powerful, and more resilience - whether they are healthy or have completed rehabilitation. Training is individualized to the athlete/person, their sport, and their goals.
At Athena, the two can work together. An athlete may begin with physical therapy and transition into performance training as they regain full capacity , creating a seamless transition from rehabilitation to high-level performance.
How do you determine when an athlete is ready to return to sport?
Retuning to sport is about much more than simply being pain-free, looking “good”, or receiving medical clearance.
Athena uses a combination of objective testing m strength and power assessments, movement analysis, sport-specific demands, functional performance and athlete confidence to determine readiness. For athletes recovering from major injuries such as an ACL reconstruction, testing is essential for a safe return.
Returning to sport should be a collaborative process. When appropriate, Athena will work alongside the athlete’s physician, surgeon, athletic trainers, coach, and other members of their performance team.
The goal is to help athletes return not only cleared, but prepared and confident to perform at the level their sport demands.
